The physical structure of large systems in extremely diverse and complicated. No clear line exists between small (simple) and large (complicated) Systems as far as their modelling is concerned. Large systems therefore are hard to formalize and deny a uniformly valid straightforward methodology which could be helpful in their analysis and handling. The designer of a large automatic control system, say, always faces the problem of choosing the appropriate mathematical techniques to achieve his particular goal.

The existent techniques of the small system control theory-The vector matrix approach in the state space and frequency domain techniques-and software package-based computational procedures are of limited value for large system design.
