About the book

The Scriptures of the Hindu faith are the Vedas. The Upanishads form the concluding portions of the Vedas and are also called Vedanta, or ‘the end of the Veda’. This book is a new translation of the Upanishads. It is both literal and graceful and freely allows the basic wisdom and spiritual reality of the originals to shine through.

The aim of these ancient books is not so much to reach philosophical truth as to bring peace and freedom to the anxious human spirit. They represent free and bold attempts to seek out the truth without thought of system. Despite the variety of authorship and the period of time covered, we can discern a unity of purpose and a vivid sense of spiritual experience. They are strongly distinguished from the Vedic Hymns and the Brahmanas (ritual treatises) by their indifference to Vedic authority and ceremonial piety.
