The present volume owes itself to the ardent desire of the editor to explore the past of Thailand, a country which has intimate connection; religious historical and cultural; with India. It is this desire which took him to different part of the Kingdom where he came across several inscriptions written in Sanskrit in various scripts. He thought of making them available to his compatriots in India as may not be familiar with those scripts. He transcribed them in Devanagiri and Roman and is publishing them together with their translation in English and textual and exegetical notes along with their appraisal from the literary and the linguistic points of view. While some of the inscriptions are damaged with their text incoherent, some of them are in fairly good condition and are in themselves fine pieces of literary composition. An overwhelmingly large number of them are in verse and as of them as are in good condition are highly enjoyable in their poetic flourish. With all the literary trappings they could well rank as minikavyas. They have provided aesthetic joys to the editor to the full, the joy he wants to share with the readers, his prime motivation for bringing out the present volume. His hope is that it will further cement the ties between India and Thailand the two great neighbors who share the glorious past and equally the glorious present.
