Agricultural drainage is the removal of excess water from the soil surface and/or soil profile of crop land, by either gravity or artificial means. The two main reasons for improving the drainage on agricultural land are for soil conservation and enhancing crop production. Irrigation is the key input in crop production. Its scientific management therefore warrants study of the related engineering aspects; such as, its application methods, scheduling, crop water requirement and water use efficiency etc. in a systematic way in order to not only save considerable amount of water but to have sustainable agricultural productivity as well. Wetland soils may need drainage to be used for agriculture. In the northern USA and Europe, glaciation created numerous small lakes which gradually filled with humus to make marshes. Some of these were drained using open ditches and trenches to make mucklands, which are primarily used for high value crops such as vegetables. The largest project of this type in the world has bear, in process for centuries times swampland and small takes. This book lays special stress on soil and soil moisture characteristics and behaviour crop plant characteristics and growth and on the successful and continuous practice of irrigation as related to drainage.
